A 40th Birthday Field Day
Recently, we were lucky enough to be the venue for a weekend of 40th birthday celebrations!
The Farm is large, field ridden, and oozing with possibilities when it comes to designing an event or outdoor activities, and man, did The Meadow Field get put to good use!
In addition to staying on The farm, using the pool, treatments at The Stable Spa, a welcome dinner, lunches, and the normal niceties that guests are accustomed to, this group went one step further…
That’s right. FIELD DAY.
Like when you were a kid at summer camp, only now you need Advil after the sack race and can get a cocktail with your dinner to either assuage your loss, or toast to your victory!
With some help from the THSF staff, a few clever team names, stickers, an “everything’s made up and the points don’t matter” scoring system, a “feather finding” scavenger hunt that literally almost broke a couple of people… this event turned out to be one of my favorite ones so far!
Calvin & Hobbes said it best:
“You just go about your business and one day you realize you’re not the same person you used to be. People change whether they decide to or not!” – Calvin
Being an adult, that stretch of adolescence between little one & young adult, it’s a gradual process. If you wind up having kids or surrogate nieces/nephews of your own, you get to have bursts of childhood wonder again through their experiences.
Sitting on the sidelines of your kids life is not where the benefits kick in though, there is something uniquely important about making time for actual childhood EXPERIENCES, as you enter adulthood.
Sure, kickball is just a game,
(or maybe, you were an athlete in college and you take it really seriously) but the reward that it offers is beyond a “cardio workout” on your apple watch, or the chance to get some Vitamin D.
Adults need to remember how to PLAY.
Be silly, fall in the mud, get a scrape, climb a tree, feel competitive, laugh wildly, embrace missed kicks, and all of the things that seem to die somewhere right around age 25ish.
Use it or lose it.
Such a simple platitude, but profound. Like any other muscle or creative endeavor, remembering how to horse around is indeed a skill that you must nurture to keep it intact!
Let go and play
You’ll find yourself more carefree, more creative, less bothered by the opinions of a coworker who probably spent the weekend watching whatever TV show and visiting the latest brunch spot. Yawn.
Go find a tree. And then climb it.
If you can’t remember the last time that you climbed a tree, this is your message to do so… ASAP. Seriously. I’m sure there’s one nearby wherever you’re reading this from.
Anyway.
The Farm served its purpose for these folks again, it was the haven, the oasis, the departure from what is expected, that everyone seems to find it to be.
Congratulations again to the winners of the weekend, may you enjoy the ridiculous prizes that were awarded to you!
