From Eagles Nest to The Horse Shoe Farm - The Endless Channel of Creation
After almost 20 years of aging, timbers cultivated on Eagles Nest make a new home for themselves on The Horse Shoe Farm.
When we developed The Lodges at Eagles Nest in Banner Elk, NC, I made a very conscious effort to limit my footprint on the environment. The home sites were low density and we only removed tress that were absolutely necessary. The result was a community that fit seamlessly with the natural environment as if it had always been there.Not letting anything go to waste, I collected all the trees we cut down and began to let them age so we could mill and use them in the properties around Eagles Nest. The result was a massive collection of specimen timbers - walnut, cherry, maple, oak - peppering the beautiful homes of Eagles Nest.
When we purchased The Horse Shoe Farm, I got excited by the process of creation and transformation that I knew we could bring to this place. As I went through each home on the farm, dreaming about the possibilities, my mind kept running back to my aging stack of wood. Cured now for almost 20 years, I knew these speicmen logs would fit perfectly into the homes on The Farm.
My Days Are Full, But My Nights Are Fuller
For the last 2 months I've spent my evenings in The Farmhouse (My wood shop as it waits to undergo its own renovation). There I've spent hours upon hours crafting these heirloom trees into magical pieces of interior and exterior decor that only brings me joy as I walk around. From a 14-foot kitchen island and sliding barn doors to shelves and a tree swings, its beautiful to see pieces of my past history find new homes in my future. As I continue daily to add these unique pieces throughout the farm, I can't help but feel the deep-rooted connection and symbolism that carries over into this new creation from my last.
